Oak Academy
Three bespoke timber cycle canopies and one large timber teaching canopy featuring solar panels.
Deliver a series of external Bike Shelters and Teaching Canopies for the Oak Academy Project in Bournemouth. These would also form a major part of the PV strategy for the development, providing needed space to house Photovoltaic Panels. These were to be of a certain construction (predominantly timber), and our challenge was to support these large structures, with minimum intermediate posts under the canopies, to provide more room for students. The required angle of the PV panels, as well as the minimum height requirement for the roof for DfE (Department for Education) meant that the structures were not only large in footprint, but also very tall comparably.
Project background
Kier is delivering the redevelopment of Oak Academy in Bournemouth, replacing the existing buildings with a modern 900-place secondary school as part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme. The new campus is designed to be net zero carbon in operation and will provide upgraded teaching, sports, performing arts and SEND facilities for both students and the wider community.
The result
The addition of the shelters has provided an excellent facility for Students and teachers alike to park their bikes whilst at school. The addition of the Teaching canopy has really enhanced the outdoor learning space, meaning Students and teachers alike can use it in all weathers.
